Mari is dedicated to helping women artists showcase their work and expand their careers, utilizing paper as their primary medium.

Mari also collects and exhibits vintage works by women artists.

Mari [pronounced m AA - ree] is a woman’s name in Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, Hungarian, Estonian, and Armenian. The name is selected for the artist-founder’s interest in the visual culture of Japan and Sweden, as well as the name's relation to Mary in English, which is her mother’s name before adoption.

Works on paper are defined in the traditional sense of printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, and collage, as well as those that utilize paper as the primary medium in new and unexpected ways.

  • Our open calls rotate through Women Who Print, Women Who Collage, our annual no-fee spring exhibition Women on Paper, Women Who Draw on Paper, and Women Painting on Paper.

  • All women are welcome to apply. Eligibility and accepted media depend on the exhibition. Each open call lists its theme, requirements, and deadline. Our online exhibitions welcome eligible artists from around the world.

  • Our other open calls have a $15 application fee, which helps cover the work of reviewing submissions, curating the exhibition, and presenting it online.

    Our annual March open call for Women on Paper is free for all applications.

  • Each exhibition is curated from the work submitted. We notify applicants after selections have been made.

  • Sales arrangements vary by exhibition and are stated in each open call. For gallery-facilitated sales, Mari receives a 20% commission and the artist receives 80%. The artist is responsible for arranging shipment to the buyer.

    For exhibitions without gallery-facilitated sales, Mari directs purchase inquiries to the artist. The artist handles the sale directly, and Mari takes no commission.

  • Yes. If your work is available for sale, please set a price that accounts for packaging and shipping to the buyer. For gallery-facilitated sales, also account for Mari’s 20% commission.
